ARhrrrr!

ARhrrrr is an augmented reality shooter for mobile camera-phones. The phone provides a window into a 3d town overrun with zombies. Point the camera at our special game map to mix virtual and real world content. Civilians are trapped in the town, and must escape before the zombies eat them! From your vantage point in a helicopter overhead, you must shoot the zombies to clear the path for the civilians to get out. Watch out though as the zombies will fight back, throwing bloody organs to bring down your copter. Move the phone quickly to dodge them. You can also use Skittles as tangible inputs to the game, placing one on the board and shooting it to trigger an explosion.

By merging graphics with props in the physical world, handheld Augmented Reality games pull the player through the small screen and into a larger merged play-space. Our primary motivation for this AR game was to explore fast-action first-person augmented reality, where the camera controls and movement that would typically require a mouse and keyboard are handled directly by simply moving the device. Advanced tracking technology allows the player to quickly zoom in and out and view the world at steep angles, making this a highly interactive and engaging game. Finally, we wanted to test tangible input mechanics, such as placing and shooting Skittles to trigger in-game events.

  1. Brilliant idea! I’ve blogged about it at http://www.notjustreality.com/lead-story/51-augmented-zombies-arhrrrr/

Is this just a proof of concept for Indiecade or are you planning to get it into production?

Right now it’s just a concept demonstration, but I’d love to take this (and similar games) into production; unfortunately, there’s no commercial device that can run such stuff yet. So, nothing will happen in that regard till there’s Tegra-based devices (or something similarly powerful) available to run it. And, of course, it would have to be financially viable.

The use of skittles was a GENIUS product tie-in. I award you 1,000 points.

Curious: is it compatible with M&Ms too?

That is awesome ! I’ve seen other AR games before but nothing so nicely polished.

not gonna lie, I thought AR was stupid until I saw that game. That was pretty cool.

Oh shoot imagine what those tabletop games would be like. Warhammer 40K?

Blair, are you sure you couldn’t get this to work in some sense on a smart phone? Android has OpenGL built in, and the T-Mobile/HTC/Google G1 seems to have all the necessary sensors. With Layar demonstrating an augmented reality browser on the G1, it seems like your game could be scaled to work, too.

Android doesn’t allow you to do native code yet, does it? So, we can’t do computer vision on the image. Plus, it’s camera (like the old iPhone) is poor quality. I think the next gen of Android phones may support JNI and a JIT, plus run on better hardware. That’ll be cool. Of course, we’d still need a real game engine to entice me to switch; Unity is ten kinds of awesome wrapped into a nice editor.

BTW, wikitude and Layar are pretty limited and not much more than tech demos; I don’t think either will actually get used much (although they’ll probably get downloaded a lot and get a lot of press).
